The library is a place where students, staff, and researchers can visit frequently to read and search for books. It constitutes several collections of books of various genres. It is a source of information and an easily accessible place. Libraries play an important role in developing knowledge and lifelong learning
The National Institute of Sowa Rigpa has different departments. It consists of an administrative block, an academic section, a hospital, an outpatient department (O.P.D.), an inpatient department (I.P.D.), a research wing, tribal health care, the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a homoeopathy section & a library. NISR Library has a collection of books consisting of Sowa Rigpa texts, manuscripts, Ayurveda, modern allopathic medicine, Sanskrit, Hindi, Bhoti, and English books. It has a collection of Kangyur and Stangyur. Kangyur and Stangyur are the classical collections of Buddhist texts originating from early periods. Thus, the library teaches us the value and importance of books and inculcates the habit of reading and imparting knowledge.
Usually, there are many libraries in Ladakh. The different institutes have different libraries. But there is a difference in the book collection in the library. The NISR library has special mandates for Sowa Rigpa studies. So, the NISR library has a rich collection of Sowa Rigpa texts. The different titles of Sowa Rigpa books are Gyud Shi, different treatises by different scholars, medicinal plant books, handbooks for different ailments, anatomy and physiology books, various therapy books, etc. Students can visit a library and search for a book by its title, author, and publisher. Libraries also help to preserve cultural and historical heritage by maintaining rare manuscripts and archival materials. The Bhoti, or Tibetan, language is the medium of Sowa Rigpa studies. Students or researchers need proficiency in a language to learn Sowa Rigpa knowledge. Good grammar, spelling, tense, and comprehension are important tools of language. The NISR library has many collections of Bhoti grammar texts. During the five-and-a-half-year course of the Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery, students can improve their language by self-studying in the library.
Students of NISR have access to the library, where they can visit and improve their knowledge; many things can be learnt from the library without a teacher. Students can improve their reading skills and language efficiency. Many authors have expressed their lifelong learning in their written books. One can successfully study and learn many theoretical and practical aspects of knowledge by reading books in the library.
The NISR library consists of a computer lab with 6 personal computers. The students and staff can use these PCs to develop their computer knowledge, and they can also learn typing, Microsoft Word, presentation preparation, and many other skills. Computers and technology are the basic tools we need to use in this modern era. Basic computer skills are mandatory in every profession.
